What Adoptees Wish Their Parents Knew | S3 E3 | Bethlehem Ambaw and Ann Petersen

Kortney has been an adoptive mom for almost eighteen years, and most of that time has been spent trying to get it right. But good intentions don’t guarantee you get it right, and adoption isn’t a story that ends when a child comes home. It keeps unfolding for the rest of their life.

In this episode she sits down with Bethlehem, who was adopted from Ethiopia, and Ann, who was adopted from Korea. Two very different experiences, two different families, two different countries.

They talk about what they were told growing up and when. Whether they ever felt different, or whether other people made it a thing before they did. Their relationship with the countries they were born in, and whether their families knew how to keep that connection alive. The pressure to be grateful, and where it came from. What their parents got right, what they wish had gone differently, and the things said with the best intentions that landed completely wrong.

And the question Kortney most wanted answered: what do you wish adoptive parents understood?

The point of this conversation wasn’t to decide whether adoption is good or bad. It was to stop assuming and start listening to the people who’ve actually lived it.
